This special performance, presented in collaboration with Körner’s Folly at Cupid Park Theatre, explores the deep roots of German wind music, tracing its evolution from village dances and outdoor festivities to the formal concert hall. For centuries, bands have played a central role in German cultural life, providing music for civic events, military ceremonies, and seasonal celebrations.

Nowhere is this tradition more visible than Oktoberfest, the world’s largest folk festival, whose music embodies the spirit of togetherness, joy, and national identity. Originating in Munich in 1810 as a wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, Oktoberfest grew into an annual event centered on parades, dancing, and music. Traditional Bavarian ensembles—featuring brass, woodwinds, and percussion—developed a distinctive sound marked by lively marches, cheerful polkas, expressive waltzes, and rousing sing-along tunes.

Alongside these folk traditions, German composers laid the foundation for much of Western art music.
