PWS Connect
The Ann L. Walker Education Initiative
PWSCONNECT is a transformative education and mentorship initiative from Piedmont Wind Symphony designed to engage and inspire young musicians in grades 6–8 during one of the most important stages of their musical development.
Focused on supporting students through the critical transition from middle school to high school band programs, PWSCONNECT addresses the common challenge of student retention in music education by creating sustained, meaningful connections between students and professional musicians.
Building Lasting Musical Connections
Unlike traditional outreach programs, PWSCONNECT emphasizes ongoing mentorship and relationship-building. Through regular interaction with Piedmont Wind Symphony musicians and artistic leadership, students receive personalized encouragement, musical guidance, and hands-on educational experiences that foster confidence, creativity, and continued participation in music.
The program is designed not only to strengthen musical skills, but also to help students develop important life skills such as:
-
Discipline
-
Collaboration
-
Creativity
-
Leadership
-
Self-confidence
By creating positive and inspiring musical experiences, PWSCONNECT encourages students to remain engaged in the arts for years to come.
Program Experience
PWSCONNECT serves middle schools throughout Winston-Salem and Forsyth County through monthly visits from PWS musicians and the Artistic Director/Conductor.
Students participating in the program experience:
-
Side-by-side rehearsals with professional musicians
-
Specialized sectional coaching and mentorship
-
Interactive music education experiences
-
Recorded reference materials and learning resources
-

Each visit is designed to provide students with practical tools, artistic inspiration, and meaningful encouragement that supports both musical and personal growth.
A Commitment to Arts Education
PWSCONNECT provides consistent, focused support to middle school music programs across the region, helping strengthen arts education while cultivating the next generation of musicians, audiences, and arts advocates.
Through mentorship, access, and meaningful artistic engagement, PWSCONNECT is helping shape the future of music in our community.
Support PWSCONNECT
The impact of PWSCONNECT is made possible through the generosity of donors, educators, community partners, and supporters who believe in the transformative power of music education. The program is also supported in part by the Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County through the Wells Fargo Arts-In-Education Grant.
Together, we are creating opportunities that inspire young musicians and strengthen our community through the arts.
